Snapshotting
A snapshot is state of virtual machine.Snapshots are taken by simply giving an order to do so at a given time and can be reverted to on demand with the effect that the VM appears exactly as it did when the snapshot was taken. VMware administrators can take multiple snapshots of a VM to create multiple possible point-in-time restore points.
Teleportation
The snapshots described above can be moved to another host machine with its own hypervisor, when VM is temporarily stopped, snapshots moved and then reserved on the new host this is known as teleportation or Migration.
Failover
Similar to teleportation failover allows the VM to continue operation if host fails.
Challenges
An issue with virtualization is the complexities of licensing.
For Example A server running a Linux OS attempting to offer virtualization windows server must still satisfy licensing requirements.
Desktop Virtualization
It is the concept of separating the logical desktop from physical machine.
VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) can be taught as a more advanced form of hardware virtualization. The user interacts with the host using another computer or mobile device by means of network connection such as LAN , WLAN or even internet. The host computer in this scenario become server computer capable of hosting multiple virtual machines at the same time for multiple users. Desktop virtualization simplifies software versioning and patch management Where the new image is simply updated on the server and the desktop gets the updated version when it reboots . It also enables centralized control over which application the user is allowed to have access to on the workstation. Moving Virtualized desktop into cloud creates hosted virtual desktop (HVD) Where the desktop images are centrally managed and maintained by specialist hosting firm. Benefits include scalability and the resolution of capital expenditure. Which is replaced by monthly operational cost.
